Holzhauser Creation Process
Each
project begins with a design which is created exclusively for the customer.
These designs are created in TurboCad, which helps to ensure that the
customer knows exactly what the finished piece will look like before I
touch tool to wood, and is also used to create the dimensioned plans that
I use for building each piece.
The
next step is to select premium quality hardwood lumber
and prepare the stock by planing the faces and machining the edges so
that it is flat and square, and ready for building. At this point I lay
out each piece or component with chalk, taking care to match the grain
and color of boards that will be glued into panels, or that will be next
to each other in the finished piece.
The
third step is to take the prepared lumber and glue it up into slightly
oversized panels that will become tops, sides, drawers, and bottoms. For
this step it is critical that the edges of the boards are absolutely square,
so that the finished panels will be flat.

Next
the panels are cut to final size, and any grooves for shelves, dividers,
or cabinet backs are added. These panels are assembled into the body of
the piece, called the carcase.

In
the next stage, all other elements such as doors, drawers, adjustable
shelving, and other design elements are created. I use mortise and tenon
joints for all doors, for maximum strength and squareness.

For
drawers, I use dovetail joinery unless the customer's budget dictates
that a more basic joint be used.

Once
all of the parts are assembled and secured, the completed piece is finished
with a stain (if required to meet the customer's requirement) and multiple
coats of an appropriate finish such as lacquer, varnish, or polyurethane,
depending on the intended use of the piece.
Finally,
the custom furniture is delivered to the satisfied customer!
